Frequently Asked Questions
Answers by Francis G. Mossé, TM Program teacher from Fairfield
The Transcendental Meditation® Technique is world's most widely practiced program for self-development and overall well-being. Through the TM Technique one can easily increase one's IQ, develop creativity, reduce cholesterol, insomnia, and hypertension, feel much better, enjoy greater success, and even participate in creating World Peace! All it takes is just a few minutes of practice of the TM technique, twice daily. How can the TM technique, a simple effortless mental technique even children can practice, be so successful? How does the TM technique work? Why does it work? Does it always work?... These are some of the frequently asked questions we are going to answer in this article.
Q: What is the TM Technique?
A: The Transcendental Meditation® Technique is a simple, natural and effortless mental technique practiced seated comfortably with eyes closed, 15-20 minutes, twice daily. During this practice, one spontaneously experiences deep rest and maximum alertness, thereby stresses are dissolved and creativity increases. As a result, one feels much better and happier.
Q: So, we ... close our eyes during the TM Technique and get all these benefits?
A: The TM Technique very easily and automatically allows the conscious mind to naturally experience the source of thought, the reservoir of infinite energy and creativity within us. It uses the very nature of the mind to settle down to a state of deep rest, to experience the state of least excitation of consciousness. This experience results in dissolving stresses and increasing energy and creativity.
Q: How can maximum energy be associated with least excitation?
A: This is a universal law of Nature clearly described by Quantum Physics. Lesser levels of excitation with greater levels of energy are found at the molecular, atomic, and subatomic levels. Beyond all matter and energy is the Unified Field, the source of all energy and creativity that is expressed in our universe.
Q: What does the Unified Field have to do with our mind?
A: The state of least excitation of our mind which we experience during the practice of the TM Technique is simply the direct experience of the Unified Field. It is a distinct state of consciousness called Transcendental Consciousness . When our conscious mind directly experiences the Unified Field, all the qualities of this Field such as infinite creativity, dynamism, unboundedness and perfect balance are directly enlivened in us.
Q: Why would one want to experience Transcendental Consciousnessthe Unified Field?
A: The experience of Transcendental Consciousness develops the individual's latent creative potential, while dissolving accumulated stress and fatigue through the deep rest gained during the practice. This experience enlivens within one's awareness creativity, dynamism, orderliness, and organizing power, which results in increasing effectiveness and success in daily life. We get healthier, and our interaction with the environment and society become much more fruitful and rewarding.
Q: Could the TM technique help my life be more organized and how?
A: Less excited states are more orderly. For instance, when we reduce the state of excitation of water droplets (by reducing their temperature) they turn into highly organized snow flakes. Similarly, the state of least excitation we experience through the TM Technique is a state of perfect orderliness. This allows our whole life to become more and more orderly and effortless.
Q: How could just 15 to 20 minutes of the TM Technique practice possibly help me balance the chaos I face everyday at work?
A: Orderliness (or let us call it coherence) is much more powerful than disorder. This again is a well known characteristic of Nature. For instance a laser beam is just coherent light, and it propagates much farther than "normal" or incoherent light. Coherence is many times more powerful than incoherence. This is why just a few minutes of the TM Technique are enough to balance our entire day.
Q: Could anyone not succeed in practicing the TM Technique?
A: Anyone who can think can practice the Transcendental Meditation Technique; it is simple, natural, effortless, and automatic.
Q: Have we really seen benefits in people who have learned the TM Technique?
A: So far about six million people from all parts of the world have learned the TM Technique and have felt benefits in all areas of life: personal development, sense of well-being, better interaction with their environment, health, and success. These results have been documented by over 600 hundred scientific research studies, many of them done at the most prestigious universities in the world.
Q: I'm quite skeptical by nature; would my skepticism keep me from succeeding with the TM Technique?
A: Belief has no connection at all with the TM Technique. The TM Technique is just a natural, easy, and automatic technique. It does not involve any particular way of thinking or feeling. So not believing wouldn't keep the TM Technique from working nor would believing in it make it work any better. No matter what our moods, background, education, or personal tendencies, it will work the same--purely mechanically.
Q: Why is it called the Transcendental Meditation program?
A: Meditation because the TM technique is just using the nature of our mind, and Transcendental because it allows the mind go beyond thought, to experience the source of thought. Transcendental means beyond.
Q: How do I start?
A: There are seven simple steps to learn the TM program. Just contact us and we'll be happy to setup a course for you.
